Getting along with people

Theodore Roosevelt was a successful man. He accomplished goals that few people even dream of. At different times in his life, he was a military hero, governor of New York, president of the United States, and a Nobel peace prize winner.

When asked about his secret to success, Roosevelt had a surprising answer: "The most important ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people."

Do people really benefit from treating others unkindly? Is an overbearing, critical, looking-out-for-number-one attitude really the way to achieve success?

Not in the long run. The writer of Proverbs reminds us that treating others with love and respect brings success, but treating them with contempt breeds failure: "A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself (Proverbs 11:17).

Your Walk The Proverbs are general principles, not particular promises. But as a general rule, an attitude of loving concern for others will benefit you, just as a critical, selfish attitude will do you harm.

Everyone stumbles, of course. But as a habit of life, are you kind to other people? You can be confident that if you show mercy, mercy will be shown to you.
